Welcome Spartan Parents!

The Dean of Students Office recognizes the important role that parents play in their student’s lives, and we encourage parents to be active participants in our UNCG community. We strive to create a “culture of care” at UNCG. Not only are we here to assist students, but we want to be a resource to parents and families as well. The Dean of Students Office is here to help students in distress, talk students through their options, and get them in touch with resources that can help

Support Services

Staff in this office assists students who need help determining who to talk to, what service to utilize, how a policy works, and a number of other concerns. Issues can range from a death in the family to the best way to communicate concern to a faculty member. Staff also respond to crisis situations involving students in order to provide support for the individual and the University community.

Support of University Values

Members of the UNCG community respect fundamental principles for ensuring a campus environment conducive to peaceful and productive living and learning. These principles include five values: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility. This office coordinates policies such as the Student Code of Conduct, which primarily sets expectations for behavior, and the Academic Integrity Policy, which primarily sets expectations for coursework. Members of the community who adopt and live by the five values in their community life will seldom have need of the Code or Policy. When members of the community fail to observe these principles, the Code and the Policy are used to affirm the minimum requirements for conduct in the University community.

Student Leadership Opportunities

Student Leadership Opportunities

Students serve in three roles with this office:

  • Case Coordinators, who present cases on behalf of the University in conduct and academic integrity hearings;
  • Advisors, who work with accused students to ensure they understand their rights and the process; and
  • Panelists, who work with faculty and staff members in determining the question of responsibility during hearings.

Staff are friendly, caring, and competent. Please don’t hesitate to contact us!

frequently asked questions

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal regulation that defines what information can be shared about a student’s educational record and when.  You can read more about FERPA at https://ferpa.uncg.edu

Call the Dean of Students Office during business hours so that the University can initiate appropriate outreach and support.  Helpful information includes, anticipated duration of hospitalization? access to phone or computer? does the student normally have a service/support animal in their care?  Are they residential, if so, are their belongings or medications that they will need immediate access to?

If you have immediate concerns, contact emergency responders by phone. Otherwise, you may consider submitting a Concerning Behavior Report.  Helpful information includes, last time contacted? How many attempts to contact and through what mediums? Any information that leads you to believe the student is just not being responsive to call/outreach?

On rare occasion, if students are having mental health crisis that is beyond the capacity of University resources OR in a state that presents a threat to themself or others, a student may need to be temporarily removed from the community so that they can focus on recovery.  This is a decision that the University does not take lightly and is evaluated by a team of experts in safety and mental health.  If this happens, the student will receive email communication that outlines the specific steps that need to be taken to return to the University, it will also be accompanied by a meeting with a staff member(s) committed to that student’s mental health and academic support.

The University has a wide range of grievance procedures and report forms to navigate. One of the benefits of the Dean of Students Office is that our office can meet with the student and help them identify the available options. What you can do to support your student is encourage them to schedule an appointment with the Dean of Students Office to discuss their options.
